Its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 performance is strong enough for demanding Android games and advanced emulators, while the second screen gives DS and 3DS-style play a real advantage.

It is not perfect as we will see in our AYN Thor review. The glass-heavy lower half attracts fingerprints, the software is functional rather than feature-rich, and performance can dip slightly when both screens are active. The AYN Thor stands out from most Android handhelds because it uses a clamshell dual-screen design aimed directly at retro players who want a more natural DS and 3DS-style experience. The AYN Thor measures around 5.9 x 3.7 x 1 inch (15.0 x 9.4 x 2.56 cm). Additionally, it weighs around 380g (0.837).

AYANEO Pocket DS, AYN Thor and 3DS Size Comparison

This makes it smaller than a 3DS, yet slightly larger than a standard 3DS.

The lid initially opens up quite loosely. Average battery life will, of course, depend on what you are playing. Brightness levels and having one or both screens switched on are also factors. However, you are looking at around 8 hours easily, and even more if lowering the performance where possible.

How loud and hot does the AYN Thor get?

During our fan noise and temperature tests, which were conducted while testing the battery life, we recorded the results. We got a highest fan noise of 63db. This dropped to 58dB on Sport mode and 47dB on Smart mode.

Additionally, a bit of a temperature buildup on the right side of the handheld was seen, reaching around 45°C. This is generally around the expected temperatures; in fact, it’s even a little lower compared to other devices.

However, the AYN Thor does warm up the area just below the Y and B buttons in particular. Thankfully, it’s not quite at the point where it becomes uncomfortable, unlike other handhelds I have experienced. Still, it is worth noting if you are very sensitive to heat.

In practice, the AYN Thor runs warm under load but stays within a manageable range, with fan noise and heat levels that are noticeable rather than deal-breaking.

System Benchmarks: An AYN Thor Review of Performance

For our benchmarks, we will be comparing the performance with the bottom screen off and on. We also compare it to the AYN Odin 2 Portal, which uses the same processor, and some others for context. Testing was done with and without the bottom display on, as there are some differences in performance.

Geekbench 6

Geekbench tests the single and multi-core performance of the CPU. We see around the expected scores for single-screen performance when compared to the Portal. However, there is a noticeable drop in performance when both screens are switched on.

AYN Thor Geekbench 6 benchmark comparison against Odin 2 Portal

Antutu

Antutu performs an overall test of this Android gaming console using a variety of benchmarks. It provides options for either the stock home screen or AYN’s custom launcher. Pressing the AYN button in the centre promptly brings up the dual screen controls. Helpfully, there are three tabs: Mode, Task, & Settings.

‘Mode’ controls the dual-screen operation. Systems up to PS2 run very well, higher-end emulation benefits from Turnip driver support, and DS or 3DS-style titles feel especially natural thanks to the built-in second display.

We saw last year with the AYN Portal just how much of a game-changer this processor was. All of your systems up to the PS2 era will run great. Provided there are no emulator compatibility issues, you shouldn’t have any problems either. In many cases, you can even upscale to 1080P with graphics improvements.

Lets check out a few dual screen systems on this Android gaming handheld.

Drastic

Dual-screen games will, of course, work great. Drastic has built-in support for two displays. Consequently, with a few changes in the settings, you can get it working perfectly. (Damn ninjas!)

Final Thoughts on this AYN Thor Review

We know the AYN Thor is a very popular handheld, and I would say that if this has been on your wish list, then you will not be disappointed.

PS2 emulator on the AYN Thor

Performance-wise, we see scores a little lower than the AYN Odin2 Portal, even with the bottom display switched off. However, with real-world usage, you would likely be hard-pressed to see any difference side-by-side. It remains a very capable processor. This capability is greatly improved with the Turnip drivers for higher-demanding emulators.

The overall design and comfortability are very good. Its size makes it extremely portable, fitting into pockets very easily. While the single glass sheet on the bottom half looks cool, it is definitely a fingerprint magnet.

The AYN Thor is perfect for dual screen gaming

In terms of comfort, it feels very nice in your hands. When compared with the AYANEO software, sometimes less is more.

The AYN Thor

The AYN Thor succeeds because it focuses on the things that matter most for a dual-screen handheld: strong display quality, solid ergonomics, reliable Android performance, and excellent compatibility for retro emulation. It feels purpose-built for players who want Nintendo DS and 3DS-style gaming without giving up modern Android flexibility.

Compared with single-screen rivals, the AYN Thor trades a little raw efficiency for a much more distinctive use case. Benchmark numbers sit slightly below the AYN Odin 2 Portal in some tests, especially when both displays are active, but the real-world experience remains strong for Android gaming and high-end emulation.

If dual-screen play is your priority, the AYN Thor is easy to recommend. If you only care about raw performance per pound, there are stronger single-screen alternatives. For the right buyer, though, this is one of the most interesting and enjoyable Android handhelds currently available.

You can learn more and buy your AYN Thor here from us at DROIX.

BUY THE AYN THOR HERE

That officially wraps up our AYN Thor review. The AYN Thor is worth buying if you want a premium dual-screen Android handheld for retro emulation, Android gaming, and especially DS or 3DS-style play.

How powerful is the AYN Thor for emulation?

The AYN Thor is powerful enough to handle most systems up to PS2 comfortably, and it can also push some higher-end emulation well depending on emulator compatibility and driver support.

Does the second screen affect performance?

Yes, a little. Our benchmark testing showed a small drop in performance with both screens active compared with single-screen use, but not enough to undermine the handheld’s overall gaming experience.

How long does the AYN Thor battery last?

In our maximum-stress battery test, the AYN Thor lasted 3 hours and 10 minutes. In normal mixed use, battery life should be significantly longer depending on brightness, performance mode, and whether one or both screens are enabled.

What are the biggest downsides of the AYN Thor?

The biggest downsides are the fingerprint-prone glass-heavy design, fairly basic second-screen software, and a small performance trade-off when using both displays at once.

The AYN Thor is a premium dual-screen Android handheld built for retro emulation, Android gaming, and portable clamshell play.
