Then why not try Pegasus for the RG552, a new front-end that makes retro gaming on Android handhelds more comfortable than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-pegasus\">What IS Pegasus?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pegasus-installer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pegasus<\/a> is, first we must understand the concept of a <strong>front-end<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In simple terms, a <strong>front-end<\/strong> is a program that is used to manage other programs. With the end-goal being to reduce the amount of &#8220;menu-surfing&#8221; required in order to use the device what you bought it for: good old-fashioned <strong>gaming<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pegasus abstracts the gamepad-unfriendly interface of Android for a more controller-centric one. Depending on the theme you use, this can be very similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/emulationstation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EmulationStation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, you should try Pegasus if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You do not like the Android user interface, but don&#8217;t want to not-use Android.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You&#8217;ve curated (or are planning to curate) a collection of games with their associated metadata (box art, etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You&#8217;re looking to browse your collection by game, and not by emulator-into-game.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some wonderful fans have put together a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pegasus-installer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">useful tool<\/a> for installing Pegasus onto the RG552 and other similar devices in a streamlined manner, so in this guide, we&#8217;re going to go over how you use this tool, and take a short look at Pegasus in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-installing-pegasus\">Installing Pegasus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Footnote: <strong>Ensure that you&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/anbernic-rg552-getting-started\/#rb-connecting-to-the-internet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">connected to the internet<\/a> throughout the entirety of this process<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-enable-app-installation-via-unknown-sources\">Enable App Installation via Unknown Sources<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To install Pegsus, you <strong>will<\/strong> first need to enable the installation of apps via unknown sources. Termux is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalocean.com\/community\/tutorials\/an-introduction-to-the-linux-terminal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Terminal <\/a>emulator built for Android. Press the A button, and you&#8217;ll be shown a configuration screen. Use the <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">Y Button<\/span><\/strong> to select different options, and the <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">A Button<\/span><\/strong> to confirm them (it presses &#8220;OK&#8221;). The default theme is <strong>Pegasus Grid<\/strong>. However, Pegasus comes with two more themes &#8211; these being <strong>RP Epic Noir<\/strong> and <strong>RP Switch<\/strong>. Plus, your average user isn&#8217;t going to know how to even find these launch commands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, there exists an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pegasus-frontend.org\/tools\/metagen-android\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online tool<\/a><\/strong> to generate the launch commands you need. Options exist for most popular emulators and RetroArch cores &#8211; but if your emulator isn&#8217;t on the list, you&#8217;ll need to make your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you happen to have already collected and prepared your box arts and descriptions (perhaps you&#8217;re copying over your metadata from <a href=\"https:\/\/351elec.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">351ELEC <\/a>or something similar), then <a href=\"https:\/\/pegasus-frontend.org\/tools\/convert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another tool<\/a> exists to convert the entries in the metadata file from one format to a format readable by Pegasus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, there also exists <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/mmatyas\/pegasus-metadata-editor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a handy desktop application<\/a> for manually tweaking the metadata file without the need to open a text editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"353\" src=\"https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-format-conversion-1024x353.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4783\" srcset=\"https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-format-conversion-1024x353.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-format-conversion-300x103.jpg 300w, https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-format-conversion-768x265.jpg 768w, https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-format-conversion-1536x530.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-format-conversion-450x155.jpg 450w, https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-format-conversion-780x269.jpg 780w, https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-format-conversion-1600x552.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-format-conversion.jpg 1673w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">If you&#8217;re doing any kind of bulk conversion, you will NEED this tool.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The full specifics of how metadata works on Pegasus can be found on their <a href=\"https:\/\/pegasus-frontend.org\/docs\/user-guide\/meta-files\/#metadata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wiki<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the shorthand of it is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You will need <strong>one<\/strong> metadata.pegasus.txt file <strong>for each emulator<\/strong> you intend to use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This metadata.pegasus.txt will be composed of a <a href=\"https:\/\/pegasus-frontend.org\/tools\/metagen-android\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">header<\/a> section that contains emulator\/platform information, <strong>and <\/strong>a section composed of entries <strong>for each game<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The latter is not mandatory, but recommended.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/pegasus-frontend.org\/tools\/convert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">convert existing metadata<\/a> (i.e., gamelist.xml), or <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/mmatyas\/pegasus-metadata-editor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">manually input metadata<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-adding-game-directories\">Adding Game Directories<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have your <strong>metadata.pegasus.txt<\/strong> files, you&#8217;ll need to <strong>place them in the game directory<\/strong>, and then point Pegasus at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open up the settings in the Pegasus Interface and scroll down, you&#8217;ll see an option to &#8220;<strong>Set game directories&#8230;<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"612\" src=\"https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-set-game-directories-1024x612.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4790\" srcset=\"https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-set-game-directories-1024x612.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-set-game-directories-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-set-game-directories-768x459.jpg 768w, https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-set-game-directories-450x269.jpg 450w, https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-set-game-directories-780x466.jpg 780w, https:\/\/droix.net\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pegasus-set-game-directories.jpg 1532w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Select it, and you&#8217;ll be met with a list of existing game directories. For you, it will be empty. Hold the Y button to add a new directory, or hold the X button to delete any existing ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: We found the deletion to be rather buggy as it would not fully confirm the deletion sometimes. So we will need to go up a layer by selecting the two dots at the top of the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep doing this until you hit the very top level of the device. Then navigate to the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\/storage\/XXXX-XXXX<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;XXXX-XXXX&#8221; will be a series of four random numbers and letters.
