More and more people are currently looking for potential upgrade paths to Microsoft\u2019s latest OS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve recently bought a computer but are unable to upgrade to Windows 11 like you expected, the answer may NOT be buying a new PC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s possible that your computer may simply have had it\u2019s TPM 2.0 component disabled. Learn what TPM is, and how to enable it on your computer in this guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-tpm-2-0\">What is TPM 2.0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trusted Platform Module is (an international standard for) a dedicated microcontroller that can be present somewhere on a PC\u2019s motherboard, or within its CPU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is what is known as a \u201csecure cryptoprocessor\u201d, and is designed to secure the hardware of a given system through the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cryptography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cryptographic<\/a> keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TPM plays a crucial role in <strong>platform integrity<\/strong>. Ensuring that the functions of the hardware are not compromised by malicious actors (i.e., malware, infected hardware).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common uses of the TPM include full-disk-encryption. Which protects the contents of a drive from unwillingly being accessed by third parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TPM is also often used in digital rights management (DRM) solutions. As the TPM is capable of generating cryptographically secure keys, the unlawful transferral of digital licenses can be more easily prevented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TPM 2.0 is the newest iteration of the TPM standard that has been in circulation <a href=\"https:\/\/trustedcomputinggroup.org\/trusted-computing-group-releases-tpm-2-0-specification-improved-platform-device-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">since 2014<\/a>. TPMs however were a feature that was typically only reserved for enterprise environments, where cybersecurity is taken much more seriously. Your average user did not need, want, or probably even know about its existence until Microsoft announced TPM 2.0 as a requirement for Windows 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-enabling-tpm-2-0\">Enabling TPM 2.0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If<\/strong> your computer is confirmed to support TPM 2.0, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/windows\/windows-11#pchealthcheck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PC Health Check app<\/a> is still telling you that you can\u2019t upgrade, it\u2019s possible that the Trusted Platform component of your system may be disabled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To enable it, you\u2019ll need to venture into your system\u2019s BIOS to flick some switches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-enter-the-bios\">Enter the BIOS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Entering the BIOS can be performed in one of two ways;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The first way is to access it at boot time. Press ESC, F1, F2 or whatever else your PC designates as the interrupt button during the booting period of the PC.<\/li><li>The second, longer but more consistent way to do so is through Windows\u2019s <strong>Advanced Startup Options<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll briefly go over the latter here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Windows start menu, select the power button, then select restart while holding the LEFT SHIFT key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"778\" height=\"536\" src=\"https:\/\/droix.net\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/01\/obs64_O564BRB7Wz.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/droix.net\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/obs64_O564BRB7Wz.jpg 778w, https:\/\/droix.net\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/obs64_O564BRB7Wz-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/droix.net\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/obs64_O564BRB7Wz-768x529.jpg 768w, https:\/\/droix.net\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/obs64_O564BRB7Wz-450x310.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 778px) 100vw, 778px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This will bring you into the Advanced Startup options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"524\" height=\"387\" src=\"https:\/\/droix.net\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/01\/obs64_7sxVcerure.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/droix.net\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/obs64_7sxVcerure.jpg 524w, https:\/\/droix.net\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/obs64_7sxVcerure-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/droix.net\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/obs64_7sxVcerure-450x332.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 524px) 100vw, 524px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From here, select Troubleshoot, Advanced Options, then finally UEFI Firmware Settings. This will reboot the PC straight into the BIOS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"412\" height=\"148\" src=\"https:\/\/droix.net\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/01\/obs64_N7kyHnrkFa.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/droix.net\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/obs64_N7kyHnrkFa.jpg 412w, https:\/\/droix.net\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/obs64_N7kyHnrkFa-300x108.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-navigating-the-bios\">Navigating the BIOS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you\u2019re in the BIOS, you\u2019ll need to locate the Trusted Platform settings for your system. You can use the arrow keys and ENTER\/ESC to move around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will look <strong>slightly different<\/strong> depending on exactly what device you\u2019re using. Please note however that this is not without it\u2019s own potential problems, and you should <strong>only attempt this at your own risk<\/strong>.<\/li><li>The second is to purchase a different model!
