The GPD WIN MAX 3 pre-order is the chance to reserve one of GPD's most capable new handhelds ahead of wider availability. Visit the GPD WIN MAX 3 product page for the latest configuration, pricing and ordering information.
A handheld built for more than gaming
The WIN MAX 3 is a Windows handheld gaming PC with a physical keyboard and integrated controller controls. Open the lid and you have a compact laptop for documents, browsing, streaming and creative software. Pick it up and the built-in joysticks, D-pad, buttons and analogue triggers are ready for gaming.
That combination makes it a useful portable gaming PC for travel, a mobile gaming PC for hotel rooms and a portable gaming computer for work away from your desk. It is also a practical compact gaming PC when connected to a monitor, keyboard, mouse and other accessories.
The covered controls help the device look more like a conventional laptop when you are working. When it is time to play, remove the covers and the full control layout is ready without carrying a separate gamepad.
Ryzen AI Max+ 388 and 395 processors
GPD offers the GPD WIN MAX 3 with two AMD Ryzen AI Max+ processor options. Both use Zen 5 architecture, integrated Radeon 8060S graphics and a configurable 45W to 110W power range.
The Ryzen AI Max+ 388 has 8 cores and 16 threads, with a 3.6GHz base clock and up to 5.0GHz boost clock. The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 steps up to 16 cores and 32 threads, with a 3.0GHz base clock and up to 5.1GHz boost clock.
The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 is the natural choice for heavy multi-core workloads such as compiling, rendering and demanding multitasking. The 388 remains a strong option for gaming and everyday use, while its higher base clock gives it a responsive feel in lighter workloads.
Both models include a 50 TOPS NPU and AMD Radeon 8060S graphics with 40 compute units and a maximum listed clock speed of 2.9GHz. Memory options include 32GB, 64GB or 128GB of LPDDR5X running at up to 8000 MT/s.

A 165Hz AMOLED display
The GPD WIN MAX 3 uses a 9.06-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a 2400 × 1504 resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio. Selectable refresh rates of 60Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz and 165Hz let you choose between lower power use and smoother motion.
The 165Hz mode is especially useful for fast-paced games that can take advantage of the available frame rate, while 60Hz can help extend battery life during reading or office work.
The touchscreen also supports active stylus input. The review found support for 4,096 pressure levels and compatibility with the Microsoft Surface Pen, giving the GPD WIN MAX 3 another useful option for notes, handwriting and document work.
Modular power for travel and desk use
One of the most unusual parts of the GPD WIN MAX 3 is its external battery system. The 97.53Wh battery module attaches magnetically and can be removed when you are working from the supplied power adapter.
This gives the GPD WIN MAX 3 more flexibility than a typical handheld gaming computer. Keep the battery attached for portable sessions, remove it for a lighter base unit or carry a spare module for longer time away from a charger.
The system can also operate directly from DC power without the battery attached. The supplied 180W adapter is intended for high-power operation, while the USB4 port supports up to 100W USB Power Delivery for lighter travel setups.
An optional fan module is available for users who want additional cooling during long, high-power workloads. It is aimed at sustained gaming, rendering and other situations where extra thermal capacity is more useful than the lightest possible setup.
Storage and connectivity
The GPD WIN MAX 3 supports up to 4TB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage in the main M.2 2280 slot. An internal M.2 2230 slot provides another storage option, while the microSD Express slot gives you a convenient way to carry additional games and files.
Connectivity includes USB4 Type-C, a second USB Type-C port, two USB Type-A ports, HDMI 2.1 FRL and a 3.5mm headphone and microphone combo jack. The USB4 connection supports DisplayPort 2.1, fast data transfer, USB Power Delivery and external graphics connectivity.
Connect the GPD WIN MAX 3 to a monitor or TV through HDMI 2.1, or use USB4 with a compatible dock or display. The system can move from a self-contained handheld to a larger desktop setup without replacing the main computer.
Gaming performance from the review unit
We tested the Ryzen AI Max+ 388 version of the GPD WIN MAX 3 at a range of power limits. In Forza Horizon 5, it reached 230 FPS at 75W and 191 FPS at 55W. Cyberpunk 2077 reached 129.33 FPS at 75W and 116.17 FPS at 55W.
Forza Horizon 6 reached 146 FPS at 80W in the supplied testing, while selected games including Forza Horizon 6, DOOM: The Dark Ages and No Man's Sky were also tested at the display's native 2400 × 1504 resolution with settings targeting 60 FPS or higher.
The full GPD WIN MAX 3 review includes the testing conditions, benchmark tables, battery results, thermal measurements and emulator coverage. These results came from pre-production hardware, so final retail firmware, drivers and power limits may change.
Emulation and everyday use
The Ryzen AI Max+ platform gives the GPD WIN MAX 3 plenty of headroom for emulation. Compatible PlayStation 3 games ran well in RPCS3, while suitable PlayStation Vita games performed well in Vita3K. Compatible Xbox 360 titles also ran well in Xenia, with problems more likely to come from game or emulator compatibility than a lack of system power.
For everyday use, the keyboard and touchpad make Windows much easier to navigate than on a conventional controller-only handheld. The fingerprint reader built into the power button provides a quick way to unlock Windows, and the built-in 5MP ultra-wide camera is suitable for video calls.
The GPD WIN MAX 3 measures approximately 207 × 147 × 34mm and weighs around 815g without a module. With the battery attached, it measures approximately 207 × 180 × 34mm and weighs around 1.2kg. That is more than a small handheld, but the extra size makes room for the keyboard, large display and modular power system.
