Everything about GPD WIN 4 – Release, Price and Specifications

4th time is the charm, no?

GPD is back at it again, announcing the GPD WIN 4. Let’s find out the Release Date, Price and Specifications of the latest Handheld Gaming PC from GPD.

After the OG GPD WIN, the company has been hard at work, pushing out yearly revisions to their Handheld Gaming PC lineup. And, as we have seen in the GPD WIN 3 Review, we are reaching a point where you can play AAA games on the GO.

GPD WIN 4 Design

Let’s be honest, GPD did not reinvent the wheel on design (*cough – PS Vita), but they are boosting some improvements in the design department. While the GPD WIN 4 reminds you of the PS Vita, some aspects are improved upon from the GPD WIN 3 Handheld

The controller layout on the GPD WIN 4 is XBOX Style, which is worlds off from the PlayStation style found on the PS Vita, which we think its a great addition.

On the front of the GPD WIN 4 Handheld you have a 6″ IPS Display.

A major improvement from the GPD WIN 3, is the hardware keyboard that can be revealed by sliding up the screen. This keyboard is also backlit! The keyboard on the GPD WIN 4 is a welcome addition for users with accessibility needs as well.

On the left side, you will find a fingerprint sensor, compatible with Windows Hello and, on the right, you will find a Optical Mouse “nibble”

On the back of the GPD WIN 4 PC Gaming Handheld you will find 2 programmable buttons, Win Max-style.

The Display on the GPD WIN 4

As a first in the handheld scene, the GPD WIN 4 will sport a landscape-native IPS display. This was a much-needed improvement in the handheld scene since all the gaming handhelds come with a portrait display (tablet), rotated.

The landscape display on the GPD WIN 4 will allow for some User Experience improvements.

The Display on the GPD WIN 4 is a 1080P H-IPS display with 368 PPI (Pixels per Inch), capable of switching between 60Hz and 40Hz. It is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 and GPD claims it has a “eye protection” layer.

GPD WIN 4 Weight and Dimensions

GPD are calling the WIN 4 the world’s smallest 6800U Handheld, and they plan on achieving that by having a slide-up design for the keyboard.

While it looks like a PS Vita, it definitely is not a PS Vita. The GPD WIN 4 is thicker, and bigger and weighs in at roughly 500 grams. This is to make room for the beefier hardware and battery.

An impressive fact is while its considerably smaller than Valve’s Steam Deck, the GPD WIN 4 will sport greater performance (keep on reading), but at what battery cost?

GPD WIN 4 Performance – What games will it play?

So, how do you like your Steam Deck? As the other Handheld Gaming PCs of this generation, the GPD WIN 4 will also come with the Zen 3+ RDNA2-based AMD Ryzen 7 6800U Processor.

You will be able to adjust the TDP of the WIN 4 up to 35W, and GPD is hinting they will use the “Power Control” software for this.

The 6800U comes with an eight-core, 16 thread processor, that can boost up to 4.7Ghz under heavy load. Since its a laptop APU, the GPU is built-in, and its not lacking.

The AMD Radeon 680M iGPU is a beast, and cna keep up with the GeForce GTX 1060. The Radeon 680M found in the GPD WIN 4 PC Gaming Handheld can handle a a high number of AAA games at native resolution.

GPD WIN 4 Thermals

But how will the GPD WIN 4 keep up with all this power? GPD claims the heat dissipation system on the WIN 4 is 35% more efficient than the one on the GPD WIN 3. That is achieved by a “PC-class large turbo fan” and thicker heat conduction pipes.

GPD has implemented a smart fan control to keep the fan running at 20% when the internal temperature is at 40c (celsius) or lower. The fan will slowly ramp up to 100% in 2% PWM increments.

GPD claims that the GPD WIN 4 will be more silent at 28W than the GPD WIN 3 at 18W.

GPD WIN 4 Games

With all that in mind, GPD is confident that the WIN 4 Handheld will handle current-gen AAA titles.

All below reports are run at the native resolution of 1920×1080. TDP is not mentioned, so we should take these reports with a grain of salt.

  • Elden Ring (Medium) – 60-65FPS
  • Mars 4 (Low) – 45-600FPS
  • Forza Horizon 5 (Low) – 100-125FPS
  • Far Cry 6 (Low) – 65FPS
  • Halo Infinite (Low) – 65-80FPS
  • F1 2021 (Low) – 54-64FPS
  • Watch Dogs: Legion (Low) – 55-61 FPS)

How much RAM and Storage will the GPD WIN 4 have?

Compared to the GPD WIN, which launched with 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM paired with 64GB of eMMC, the GPD WIN 4 will be a beast!

The AMD Ryzen 7 6800U APU will allow GPD to cram up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 2TB of NVMe Storage.

Can I upgrade the RAM on the GPD WIN 4?

The GPD WIN 4 PC Gaming Console has LPDDR5 RAM, which means its soldered onto the motherboard. That, while it allows for higher transfer speeds (6400MT/s), unfortunately means you cannot upgrade the RAM.

Can I upgrade the Storage on the GPD WIN 4?

Yes! While we (DroiX) don’t recommend it, nor we will provide support for it – for the technical-minded ones, you can theoretically replace the NVMe SSD in the GPD WIN 4.

GPD WIN 4 Battery Life

To keep up with all the power, GPD equipped the WIN 4 Handheld with a 45.62Wh Li-Po Battery. That is non-replaceable.

GPD claims that the battery will last roughly 2 hours on heavy usage, 3-6 hours on moderate usage, and 10 hours on light usage.

Whilst GPD is not very clear on the definitions of “heavy usage”, we can assume that display brightness, wi-fi strength, connectivity and software running in the background play a major role.

We do know that AMD APUs are more efficient at lower TDPs, whilst still maintaining a respectable FPS in games, which should allow you to have longer gaming sessions without sacrificing too much power.
