Here is a round up of gameplay footage of some popular GPD WIN 4 games, some requested by our YouTube channel subscribers. We have tried a mix of both old and newer games and show the settings for best visuals and when possible the best battery life.
Pocky & Rocky Reshrined
Pocky & Rocky Reshrined is a remaster of the SNES and GBA game called Pocky & Rocky. This game itself is based on the original 1986 Arcade game Kiki Kaikai by Taito. Despite its cute graphics, it’s quite a tricky action top-down shooter.
Pocky & Rocky Reshrined is one of the very low demanding GPD WIN 4 games! We can run this at 1080P at just 8W TDP, or 720P at 5W TDP if you wanted to save some battery life on the GPD WIN 4. There’s no graphics settings as such to worry about, so just pick up and play!
Atomic Heart
Atomic Heart is one of the more recently (as of March 2023) released AAA GPD WIN 4 games for Windows. It is an action adventure set in a utopian world where the launch of the latest robot control system leads to a rebellion against their human creators.
After some experimenting on the GPD WIN 4 with the settings we have a few different options based on preference. You can run at 720P at 28W TDP on the default low graphics settings at 60 FPS. You can go 720P at 28W TDP with the default High graphics settings at 30 FPS, but you may get the occasional frame drop. If you lower the graphics settings to the default Medium, it is pretty much a solid frame rate.
Shadow Warrior 3
Shadow Warrior 3 was released just over a year ago in 2022. It is an action adventure game continuing the story of Lo Wang and his enemy Orochi Zilla! Lo Wang unknowingly released an ancient dragon in the previous game and now must recover it.
Overall it plays well on the GPD WIN 4. You can play the game at 720P 28W TDP with the default Low graphics settings locked to 60 FPS. You will however get some frame drops in busy scenes. While using 720P on the default Medium settings locked to 30FPS we did see some drops below when loading in new parts of the level. Having a mix of Medium and Low helped keep it to a very stable 30 FPS on this handheld gaming PC.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
Next in our GPD WIN 4 games played was Wo Long Fallen Dynasty on day one of its release date. It is an action RPG set in a dark fantasy version of the Chinese Later Han Dynasty. You get to fight creatures and enemy soldiers in a kind of Dark Souls type game. There has been many reports regarding the performance on this game from many low and high end desktop PC owners, so we was interested to see how this game runs on the GPD WIN 4.
With a brand new game we do often see performance issues across a range of devices, both lower and high end. In our tests at 720P at 28W TDP locked to 60 FPS we were getting around 45 frames per second which is not ideal. Lowering the frame rate to 30 FPS improves the performance but we did get some rare drops below 30. We had to use upscaling to really help and setting it to 80% was about the right level. With some time working on the game and fixing the performance issues, we are quite sure that the performance will increase and get a stable framerate on the GPD WIN 4 as the game does appear to be underperforming.
HiFi Rush
HiFi Rush is one of my favourite GPD WIN 4 games of 2023 so far. It is an action game with heavily influenced music gameplay. You play as a wannabe singer Chai and along with some allies you revolt against a robot enhancement megacorp. What makes this stand out is that everything is synchronised to the beat of the music, licensed from legendary bands such as Nine Inch Nails and The Prodigy. It’s great gameplay backed with amazing looking cartoon style graphics and animations that look spot on with the GPD WIN 4.
You can play at 720P at 28W TDP default High graphics settings locked to 60 frames per second and it will for the most part remain at 60 or just above. If you want a stable 60 then a mix of Medium and High graphics will fix that. And if you want to save some battery then lock the framerate to 30 on Low graphics.
Hogwart’s Legacy
I have to admit I know absolutely next to nothing about the Harry Potter universe, I’ve never read the books or seen the films! Many of our viewers on YouTube wanted to see how this open-world action RPG runs on the GPD WIN 4. From initial impressions the graphics and gameplay look great, and most likely the references and story will be amazing for fans of Harry Potter, it all went well over my head though!
We got the game running very well at 720P at 28W TDP locked to 60 FPS, on the default Low graphics with no upscaling. Despite it being on the Low graphics, it still looks very good, but we did see some occasional drops in frame rate to around 55 FPS on this handheld gaming PC. Going with 720P default Medium graphics at 30 FPS with no upscaling, we got far better results and some rare drops to 28 FPS when the game was loading in new parts of the map. If you really wanted to, you could drop to the Low graphics settings for a stable 30 FPS.
Dead Cells
Dead Cells is a rogue-like ‘metroidvania’ inspired GPD WIN 4 games in which you must explore an ever expanding castle. You will die, alot! But this is part of the game as like in Dark Souls, you respawn back at the beginning with new upgrades, and can attempt again. This is a great game everyone should have in their library!
Dead Cells is the perfect game on the GPD WIN 4 if you are travelling for long periods of time and are not near a power supply. You can run this game at 1080P 60FPS at only 8W TDP and experience no issues at all. If you did want even more battery life, you can go even lower at 720P at 30 FPS with just 5W TDP. With either settings you will see a decent number of hours without having to recharge!
Powerwash Simulator
Powerwash Simulator is a game in which you literally powerwash/jetwash in various scenarios such as gardens, a mini golf course and even Tomb Raider & Final Fantasy themed locations. It sounds kinda pointless, but it is also strangely addictive and relaxing to play.
Powerwash Simulator runs great on the GPD WIN 4. We can run it at 1080P 60FPS at 20W TDP on the default High graphics settings. You may see some rare dips to 58 but you would not notice unless you have a frame counter running. To save some battery life you can run at 720P 30FPS at only 8W TDP on the Low graphics settings. With all that extra battery life you can make sure you don’t miss a spot!
Resident Evil 4 Remake Demo
Although this is only the demo of the Resident Evil 4 remake, the final game should run the same, if not better once it has been released.
At 720P resolution on the default ‘Prioritise Graphics’ settings locked to 30 FPS at 28W TDP, we do get some frame drops to around 25 FPS in busy scenes.
Changing to ‘Balanced Graphics’ settings lock to 30 FPS at 28W TDP then we get a solid 30 FPS, you can also increase a few individual graphics settings. If we change the settings to the default ‘Performance’ settings locked to 60 FPS at 28W TDP then the game runs very stable.
To save some battery life you could lock it to 30 FPS and lower the TDP to 15W. This all is based on the demo version running on the WIN 4, but the same should apply to the final game.
Sons of the Forest
Sons of the Forest is a recent survival game in which you are sent to find a missing billionaire on a remote island. Things take a turn when you crash land and you must survive the secrets found there.
At 1080P on the Ultra Low graphics locked to 30 FPS at 28W TDP, you should have mostly stable frame rates on the GPD WIN 4 as we were getting 35-45 FPS without the FPS lock.
We got far better results at 720P. On High graphics settings at 28W TDP locked to 30 FPS we got solid frame rates. If you wanted to save some battery, then you can lower the graphics to Ultra Low and the TDP to around 18W and it will run great like many GPD WIN 4 games!
That concludes our roundup of just some of the many great GPD WIN 4 games you can play. You can learn more about it in our full GPD WIN 4 review, or buy the GPD WIN 4 here. Or if you would like something different you can find our range of handheld gaming PC’s here.
