How to install or replace the GPD WIN MAX 3 2280 and 2230 NVMe SSDs

Dave DROIX Support Last updated 13 October 2026 · 2 min read · 14 views

The GPD WIN MAX 3 has an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD location and an M.2 2230 NVMe SSD location. This guide covers the preparation, installation and checks involved in adding or replacing a drive. Watch the video below as you work: it shows the access and reassembly steps on the device itself.

What you’ll need

  • A Phillips 000 screwdriver
  • A compatible M.2 2280 or M.2 2230 NVMe SSD for the location you’re using
  • Tweezers, optionally, for handling small screws
  • A clean, well-lit workspace

Before you open the GPD WIN MAX 3

Back up any files you need to keep. If you’re replacing the SSD that contains Windows, prepare your installation media first, or arrange to clone the existing drive. A new, blank SSD will not contain your Windows installation or files.

Shut down Windows completely, unplug the power adapter, remove the external battery module and let the device cool. Keep screws organised as you remove them, and avoid touching exposed contacts or components unnecessarily. If you’re not comfortable opening compact electronics, contact DROIX support or a qualified technician.

Install or replace the SSD

  1. Follow the video to open the GPD WIN MAX 3 and expose the SSD location you intend to use. Work slowly and do not force the casing or any internal part.
  2. Identify the 2280 or 2230 location before removing a drive. The two SSD sizes are different; use a drive that matches the intended location.
  3. If replacing an existing SSD, remove its retaining screw, then gently slide the drive out of its connector. Keep the screw safe.
  4. Align the replacement SSD’s connector with the socket and insert it gently. Do not force it if it does not seat correctly.
  5. Secure the SSD with its retaining screw. It should sit flat without being bent or overtightened.
  6. Follow the video to reassemble the device, checking that nothing is trapped or displaced before closing the casing.
  7. Reattach the battery module or connect the power adapter, then start the GPD WIN MAX 3.

After installation

If you replaced the primary M.2 2280 SSD: A blank replacement drive will not boot into Windows. Install Windows on the new SSD using our guide to reinstalling Windows on GPD WIN devices, then complete Windows setup and restore your backed-up files. If you cloned the original SSD successfully, check that Windows boots from the replacement instead. Use only installation files confirmed for the GPD WIN MAX 3; do not use an image listed for a different GPD model.

If you added an M.2 2230 SSD: Boot into Windows from the existing primary drive. Right-click the Start button and open Disk Management. Identify the new 2230 SSD by its capacity, initialise it if prompted, then create and format a new volume. Check the selected drive carefully before formatting so you do not erase the primary SSD.
