GPD have teased their forthcoming laptop called the GPD Duo which has dual vertical displays.

Original it started with only a single teaser image (below) has been shown of the new GPD Duo. It shows a laptop style base and two vertical monitors. GPD mention that the displays will be AMOLED with 10-bit colour depth 1.07 billion colour performance. And over the coming days we will be updating this article with more news and information as soon as GPD provide them.

If you remember back to our GPD leaks article last year there was a mention of a dual screen device which was named as the GPD P4 MAX. This device was expected to have an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U, so we will take a guess that the GPD Duo could have the newer AMD Ryzen 7 8840U instead.

Today GPD revealed another image of the GPD Duo design. For traditional laptop use, the second screen can be folded back-to-back with the primary display, maintaining familiar ergonomics. When the second screen is flipped upward, users gain double the screen space, enhancing productivity and multitasking capabilities. Additionally, the screens can be folded flat against the keyboard, enabling a tablet-like mode, albeit thicker than typical tablets.

In a recent update, GPD highlighted that the Duo will boast an integrated, three-stage design. Unlike other dual-screen laptops that rely on external Bluetooth or wireless keyboards, which often suffer from poor thermal performance and delayed inputs, the Duo promises seamless integration and optimal performance. The device will include a full QWERTY keyboard and a lightweight OLED screen. Despite the dual screens, the device remains balanced and compact, alleviating concerns about tipping over.

The screens offer a 16:10 display ratio, 2880 x 1800 resolution, and 255 PPI, with features such as a 60Hz refresh rate, 10-point touch, and 4096-level pressure sensitivity compatible with Surface Pen stylus. This setup ensures high color accuracy with 100% Adobe RGB and 133% sRGB color gamut coverage, making it ideal for professional design work. Additionally, the screens boast a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and near-zero nits black for true blacks and vivid whites, enhancing both movie watching and gaming experiences.

Designed for ultimate performance and portability, the GPD DUO is equipped with robust hardware that maximizes productivity and gaming capabilities, rivaling high-end gaming laptops. It features an integrated design with a non-detachable keyboard, dismissing the need for unreliable wireless peripherals. The device includes at least 2 M.2 ports for expandable storage up to 16TB, and supports up to 96GB of RAM to facilitate cross-platform development environments.

The OLED screens are ultra-thin and lightweight, ensuring the entire device, when folded, is the size of an A4 paper and fits comfortably in a shoulder bag. With a peak brightness of 500 nits and a 1 ms grayscale response time, the GPD DUO promises e-sports-level display performance, making it a versatile tool for various scenarios, from office tasks to high-end gaming and creative projects.

A look into the GPD Duo RnD

GPD provided an update looking into the research and development of the GPD Duo.

We have observed that more and more designers and developers are adopting dual-screen setups for work, but these setups are not portable. Although there are dual-screen monitors on the market, the screens and the main unit are separate, making them inconvenient to carry. On the other hand, products that integrate the screen and the main unit into a dual-screen setup clearly do not align with market demand. They all use a split design, requiring an external Bluetooth keyboard.

The idea of integrating the screen and the main unit comes from tablets, while the concept of dual screens comes from foldable smartphones. However, if CPUs like the 185H and 1355U are made into tablets with an additional screen while still being ultra-thin, it would require sacrificing cooling and performance. Not only does this waste a CPU, but anyone who has used it knows how weak it is as a productivity tool.

We aim to create a product that truly meets user needs!

1. Firstly, it must feature an integrated design, with no separation between the keyboard and the main unit. Bluetooth and wireless keyboards&mice are inferior to wired ones in many aspects. Virtual keyboards are merely a makeshift solution for simple tasks; no one seriously believes that a tablet plus a keyboard or a phone plus WeChat equals a productivity tool!

2. Its performance must be maximized to fully exploit the hardware potential. Whether for gaming or office work, it should match the performance of a gaming laptop!

3. It must use the best OLED screens, and it must be dual-screen. It should have gaming-level response speeds and be a native 10-bit display with 100% Adobe RGB color gamut coverage to meet the professional needs of the design field. It must also have pressure sensitivity and natural handwriting to ensure more detailed drawing effects to replace graphics tablets!

4. It should have comprehensive ports with the strongest expandability, allowing connection to an external graphics card!

5. It should support at least two M.2 slots. By selecting the highest capacity SSDs available on the retail market, the device should be expandable to 8TB or 16TB of storage! Its memory could reach up to 96GB, aiming to create a multi-system, multi-IDE running cross-platform development environment for virtual machine users!

6. It must have battery life that rivals any current high-end ultrabook!

7. It must be portable, the size of an A4 sheet of paper, so that it can be carried in a shoulder bag by women and used for work on the go!

8. As an AI PC, it must possess powerful computing power, storage capacity, and multimodal interaction capabilities!

Finally, it must adapt to various scenarios, not just limit itself to being a laptop! For example, the secondary screen can be connected to a third-party main device for work or gaming, and in tablet mode, it can run Linux or macOS, among others!
