Keeping Private – What To Do If Your ISP Sends A Warning Letter

Created by Matt Britt, see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Internet_map_1024.jpg for more information

There have recently been reports that British ISPs are now sending letters to customers that they think are watching unofficial online streams. What can YOU do to protect YOUR privacy?

The ISPs (Internet Service Providers) normally mention that someone has used the customer’s internet connection to view media that is hosted with companies that do not have permission from the copyright holder, and suggest legitimate alternatives via „Get It Right From A Genuine Site”. Currently users of Peer To Peer services (P2P – torrents, AceStreams etc) seem to be most likely to receive the warning letter.

This situation has led many to question just how closely their internet provider is monitoring their online activities. DroiX recommend you ensure that only streams you are entitled to watch are accessed.

Our first recommendation would be to speak to anyone in your household who accesses the internet and let them know they should always respect the law. Also make sure that your WiFi network has a strong password to prevent strangers from using your internet connection and getting you in trouble.

If you are certain your WiFi network is secure,  and you want to ensure that your privacy is respected online, one solution is to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection.

Why Choose IPVanish (All Rights Reserved - IPVanish.com)

Encrypting your data with a VPN connection from IPVanish means snoopers won’t have access to your online activities. It is like sending a letter to your friend using a secret code – it won’t matter if the delivery man or sorting office open the letter, they will not be able to understand what you are saying to your friend.

There are other advantages to using a VPN, please see https://droidbox.co.uk/how-to/vpn-introduction for more general information, whilst https://droix.net/blogs/wordpress/droidbox-announces-partnership-with-ipvanish-vpn covers IPVanish’s specific benefits.
