ANBERNIC RG351MP Case

Yep, this is a lovely little handheld but I feel there should be a caveat to the five stars; only if you enjoy tinkering. Out of the box this is a solid four stars, it's easy enough to just pop the ROMs you want on there and have a great time but you're only going to get the best out of it if you are happy to spend a good few hours tinkering.

Tinkering is going to involve things like installing a new operating system and configuring the emulators individually. This is not super easy, but it's fairly straightforward and there are a lot of good guides available (look for Retro Game Corps, they have excellent guides). To me, this tinkering was actually quite fun and satisfying so adds to the joy of the device. You get to personalise it and there's some choice as to how you set it up, right down to which operating system to use. If that sort of technical work is not for you, then it's going to be a chore which you can either suffer through (think at least two or three hours of working through step by step guides) for an excellent result or just stick with what you get out of the box which is still pretty good. If you enjoy it like I did then it's just extra fun.

I'm sure others will note that the N64, Dreamcast and PSP emulation is hit and miss, so don't expect to be able to play all of your favourites. I've been happily playing Shenmue on this little handheld, though, which is pretty amazing.

Overall, if you know what you're getting into then this is going to bring much joy. If a bit of work setting it up is the price for the flexibility it offers I'd say it's well worth it.

Brilliant retro handheld.
This thing works straight out the box turn it in play in seconds.
Come with loads of games.
I thought the screen size mite be a bit small but it's actually not.
Gameboy advance games look and play amazing in this device which is the main reason I bought it.
Highly recommended.

You have probably already watched a number of reviews before looking at this device, but if not I strongly suggest watching Retro Game Corps on YouTube. It's a fantastic device for under £100, the build quality is great and emulates a huge back catalogue of consoles.

Build quality:
The plastic case has been said to be similar to a Nintendo Switch, and it is very nice. It has a a slight textured feeling which helps with grip, and looks higher quality than a smooth finish. All the buttons and sticks are great quality and feel just right; not to solid or squishy.

Emulation:
I didn't use the stock firmware and instead changed it to 351ELEC following a guide. So far GBA, NDS & PSX run amazingly well (Had a couple crash on start up but I blame my knowledge of PSX ROMs, not the device)

Great fun, great choice of apps, bought for grandson but big geek grandad enjoyed pimping it up with a few tech tweeks of his own - Weight good - fits hand well

Love it, great to tinker with, sturdy, light weight, battery lasts ages, screen has a great viewing angle.
Would be better if the thumb stick and d pad were switched like previous models.

I spent a lot of time watching videos to decide on what retro handheld to buy and I'm glad I waited for the RG351P to come along. Apart from a minor build quality issue with the backlight on the display the handheld is really nicely designed and built. The screen is excellent and the 3:2 aspect ratio doesn't bother me at all. I've customised the interface and added new games easily. Overall I'd highly recommend this device.
