What is Boxing Day, really?
The exact origins of Boxing day are not entirely known. But we can say one thing for certain, and that’s that it is not related to punching people!
The most commonly thought origins of Boxing day date back to the 17th century. Wherein the servants of families and various public employees (postmen, etc.) would receive gifts as a thank-you for their hard work throughout the year.
This was most often given in the form of a simple box. Most often these boxes contained money, but would sometimes contain more general gifts such as clothing or leftover food.
Fast forward a few hundred years and the „point” of the holiday is muddled somewhat. But is nonetheless celebrated now mostly as an extra day of rest after a busy Christmas Day.
In some ways Boxing Day is also comparable to Black Friday. With many retailers offering sales of some kind to entice families (often together during this period) to come out and spend any Christmas bonuses they have have received on further gifts and goodies.
