Setting up your Minisforum PC is as easy as pie, connect:

  2. The UM780 XTX to your display(s) using any HDMI/DisplayPort/USB 4.0 cable.
  3. Any peripherals (mouse, keyboard, etc.) to your UM780.

You can also make use of the provided stand and/or VESA mount to improve your overall aesthetic, space management and versatility, but is not necessary for the necessary set-up process.

The mini PC may reboot once or twice during the setup process – this is completely normal. Once complete, you will be able to log into Windows.

Updating Windows, Firmware & Drivers

Downloading and updating your device frequently isn’t something many people look forward to… however, it’s extremely important and necessary to do so in order not to only improve performance and compatibility but also to ensure your device is protected and less vulnerable to security breaches. We’ll go through and cover everything you should update on your UM780 XTX below.

Update Windows

Windows is the preinstalled Operating System on your Minisforum UM780 XTX, so updating it regularly will be core to ensure you have access to the latest Windows and software features, as well as to resolve any vulnerabilities such as prior or existing bugs, potential security breaches and even performance or stability issues. These updates are incredibly important and you should be updating these as soon as they come out – in case you’re not sure how to do this, we already have a step-by-step guide detailing exactly what you need to do below.

Update AMD Graphics Drivers

Updating your UM780 XTX graphics drivers doesn’t only boost the in-game frame rate but it can also improve general device stability and performances for any software. Old drivers can’t always communicate with the latest software and updates, and outdated drivers can cause poor performance, screen flickering, and even program and system crashes. We recommend typically updating your graphics drivers as soon as a new update is available, or whenever you encounter graphical problems, so be sure to check often.

We’ve got a short and straightforward how-to guide below covering where to find, and how to install these drivers.

Update Device-Specific Drivers

Ensure that you download and update your device-specific drivers here. These official model-specific drivers are tailored to the exact specifications of your device and allow manufacturers to provide better, targeted, and more direct support to address any specific issues or bugs.

Restart Your PC

Restarting your device will finalise any Firmware or Software updates, which are often required to ensure these updates correctly complete the installation process. Doing this after installing all updates also creates a perfect baseline for stress testing your PC, which is something we highly recommend doing for every new device you get.

Benchmarking Your UM780 XTX

We suggest running at least a general benchmark software such as PCMark, which assesses various aspects of your device during general productivity at high workloads. But your PC is fully functional, and equipped with the latest updates, so why do we recommend benchmarking your new device? It helps understand the limits of your device but also to check for any problems that may be inhibiting your performance.

If you’re unsure or just want some guidance, please see our article below.

(Optional) Upgrading RAM & Storage

It’s possible to install and upgrade both the RAM & SSD for your UM780 XTX. Before buying new components, please ensure that it is compatible with your mini PC. Refer to the user manual or our product listing for the specifications. If you are not sure, please contact us and we can confirm the specs.

If need any guidance on how to do this, please see our article below.

(Optional) Installing PCIe to OcuLink Adapter

If you’re interested in how to install the PCIe to OcuLink adapter board on your Minisforum UM780 XTX, check out our dedicated and straightforward guide below.

(Optional) Troubleshooting OcuLink Cable

You may run into an issue when trying to get OcuLink working, where you are prompted that BitLocker is outdated and is requesting to be updated. Following the instructions will update BitLocker and work as intended. However, connecting/disconnecting the OcuLink device will result in BitLocker prompting the same message. A Windows security issue causes this, and there is not much we can do to fix this. However, we can circumvent this by either of the following:

  1. Updating each time you connect/disconnect a device.
  2. Disabling BitLocker in Windows (at your discretion).

Disable BitLocker

BitLocker is a full encryption feature incorporated within Windows OS that is designed to protect your data. You can turn off this feature as a hotfix for the issues occurring when connecting a device via OcuLink. If you decide to disable Bitlocker on your Minisforum UM780 XTX, do the following:

  1. Select Start Menu (Windows logo) from the taskbar.
  2. Search & select Manage BitLocker.
  3. Select Turn off BitLocker.
  4. Confirm Turn off BitLocker.

This process may take a few hours to decrypt your drive and you may also be required to input your password or PIN (if you have one). You can continue to use your device during this time.

(Optional) Connecting GPD G1 eGPU

The GPD G1 eGPU docking station provides more port accessibility (USB, HDMI and a DisplayPort) for your device. The biggest feature is the built-in Radeon RX 7600M XT eGPU! It allows you to run games at higher FPS and visuals at higher resolutions. Even if you do not connect the eGPU via the OcuLink port, you can instead use a USB 4.0 port. Check out our Getting Started guide for the GPD G1 eGPU docking station, also embedded below, which shows how to set up and use your UM780 mini PC with the GPD G1.
